The WAKIAGA Youth Polytechnic is a public vocational training centre. It has been approved by the Homa Bay District Education Board as a recognised educational institution. It offers various courses. The school is located on a two-hectare piece of land in Rusinga East, Mbita Division and Mbita Sub County. The school admits learners from the entire Homa Bay district and other districts.
Creating educational opportunities is an essential foundation for the sustainable development of the community. Training in skilled trades and the promotion of business know-how and social skills create realistic future prospects for local young people who want to earn a living locally. They no longer have to leave the island and their families for training and jobs. They not only contribute to the community with the skills they have learnt, but also become part of the local economy, which can develop by setting up businesses, offering services and thus reinvesting. This creates more independence, resilience and security in the community.
In 2023, the school will receive major funding from the genialsozial programme of the Saxon Youth Foundation. The construction of a new kitchen building with a dining hall, expansion and furnishing of the dormitory for the boarding students, installation of a solar-powered drinking water system as well as a chicken farm and a kitchen garden for learning and self-sufficiency at the school will significantly improve the learning and living conditions.
Extensive new equipment for all vocational courses such as carpentry, bricklaying, electricity, tailoring and, of course, IT and business administration will improve training.
