KWEPU implements various projects to support the community, especially in the areas of child welfare, women empowerment and environmental restoration. KWEPU places great emphasis on sharing ideas, knowledge and best practices to improve both forest cover and the livelihoods of the local community.
Now we receive the report for the year 2024.
Tree Nursery
Since its foundation in 2020, KWEPU has been working with various institutions such as schools, churches and villages to encourage them to plant trees. In this year 2024, Rusinga experienced a long drought, but many seedlings were donated to schools and individual households.
In August 2024, a total of 2,400 seedlings were provided for planting. A total of 120 papaya seedlings were also planted in the KWEPU orchard. Four thousand seedlings are currently being grown in the nursery and are ready for planting. Production will continue in order to have enough seedlings by January 2025, as long periods of rainfall are expected during this time.
Orchard and Garden
KWEPU also established a fruit orchard in 2022 to improve food security in the region. Various types of fruit can currently be harvested, e.g. paw paws, bananas, passion fruit, cassava and also passion fruit and potatoes, both for sale and for home consumption.
Local vegetables and kale are also planted in order to earn some money over the next few months and to have something to eat at home.
Woodlot
There is also a woodland on the lakeshore, only three years old! Unfortunately, many trees were washed away by the water last year when the water level rose.
Sewing / Tailoring Works
This is another income-generating activity (IGA) for KWEPU. Here, some members of the community are trained in the production of garments. Since this programme was launched, nine women and two men have been trained.
KWEPU also produces school uniforms for the neighbouring schools, which are sold to the pupils at affordable prices.
