I am Magrate Auma, a widow from Rusinga Island. I am proud to be a member of this program. I have benefited from it. I am one of the last group to benefit from the pay back loan and we are late to pay back due to some challenges like in my case my cage was attacked by wild cat and some chickens killed but we agreed to pay back before 15th of January 2023 with a penalty for late payment. This was agreed upon by all the members during our last general meeting held in November 9th 2022. Since we have a plan to start table banking next year 2023 January.
I want to take this chance on behalf of other members to wish you all Merry Christmas and happy New Year.
Ubuntu Initiative was introduced in Rusinga Island as cooperative of farmers focused to support the rural community in building resources making available funds especially for vulnerable families allowing them to generate an income through poultry farming and objectively working towards independency and food security.
Ubuntu Initiative started with fifteen households with a target of sixty households. It was a revolving fund and currently the initiative has reached the target of sixty household
Eggs and poultry make the major basic food around the island. This makes poultry farming to be one of the promising business. As much as we have reached the target but we have encountered some challenges, some of the cages were leaking and this really exposed the chickens to be very unsafe during rainy season and this lead to some of the farmers to lose their chickens.
