Education

Our association sees several tasks in cooperation with our partners:

The most important one was the construction of the school library in 2017 to provide workstations and books of all subjects to the students of the area. There are no textbooks in the general schools. The stock of books in the school library was increased by 800 books thanks to a donation from the city of Glashütte in 2020.

A health education program is also organized through the school library.

Thanks to the notebooks that have now been provided, IT courses can be offered by local specialists.

Other support is given to individual and needy students through sponsorships, so that they can attend the next paid grades after the free elementary school.

Another focus is environmental education. Tree plantings on school property are done under the guidance of the children. The tree nursery established at Kamasengre School in 2021 is operated directly in the school grounds and becomes part of the school’s educational concept. In the tree nursery implemented by the KWEPU 2020 association, 10 children are invited to work and learn every weekend.

The Rusinga Youth Greening Movement “I am Rusinga’s Future” (RYGM), a youth group founded in 2021, runs our third tree nursery and conducts promotional campaigns throughout the island, advocating for environmental protection, tree planting and environmental education. The goal is to involve or activate other youth and groups so that this becomes a growing movement. But also that the initiative and therefore the responsibility lies more with the youth.

With the new Dechwa Fish Farm, training for fish farming was started in the fall of 2021. Qualification for skilled trades creates the basis for an own income and further economic development on Rusinga. For the strengthening of vocational training, the cooperation with the Wakiaga Polytechnic will therefore be expanded.

Phionah Achieng has initiated the mentorship program at Dr. Williams School. Students are empowered, taught important values such as self-worth and self-confidence. They receive guidance and are motivated to work on themselves and take responsibility for the community. Phionah’s strong call is infectious:
